The first English martyr, Saint Alban, was a Romano-British soldier. The cross or saltire is diagonal as he was not crucified, but beheaded. Hence he was entitled to the cross of martyrdom, but not in the usual form. More information about Saint Alban can be found at the following web sites. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Alban The picture on the right is a stained glass rendering that is on the right side of the altar in the front of our church. There are a total of 14 stained glass windows at Saint Alban's. They depict the 12 apostles and the sacred heart of Jesus in addition to Saint Alban. |

The flag or shield of Saint Alban is a yellow or golden saltire on a blue field. (A saltire is
an X- shaped cross). It usually occupies the entire field upon which it is placed.
